  • Legendary Disney Imagineer Marty Sklar Dies At 83

    July 27, 2017

Legendary Disney Imagineer Martin A. “Marty” Sklar passed away in his Hollywood Hills home on Thursday. He was 83. During an illustrious career spanning 54 years, Marty worked closely with Walt Disney and was instrumental in creating, enhancing and expanding Disney’s creative vision. Named a Disney Legend in 2001, he is best remembered and revered by fans around the world for his work bringing Disney’s theme parks to life.

“Everything about Marty was legendary – his achievements, his spirit, his career,” said Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “He embodied the very best of Disney, from his bold originality to his joyful optimism and relentless drive for excellence. He was also a powerful connection to Walt himself. No one was more passionate about Disney than Marty and we’ll miss his enthusiasm, his grace, and his indomitable spirit.”

Born in New Brunswick, N.J., on February 6, 1934, Marty was a student at UCLA and editor of its Daily Bruin newspaper when he was recruited to create The Disneyland News for Walt’s new theme park in 1955. After graduating in 1956, he joined Disney full-time, and would go on to serve as Walt’s right-hand man—scripting speeches, marketing materials, and a film showcasing Walt’s vision for Walt Disney World and Epcot. During this period, he also joined WED Enterprises, the forerunner of Walt Disney Imagineering, and he would later become the creative leader of Imagineering, leading the development of Disney theme parks and attractions for the next three decades. He retired as Executive Vice President and Imagineering Ambassador on July 17, 2009, Disneyland’s 54th birthday. Disney marked the occasion by paying tribute to Marty with the highest Parks and Resorts recognition, dedicating a window in his name on Disneyland’s City Hall.

“Marty was the ultimate Disney Imagineer and Cast Member. From his days working as an intern with Walt to just two weeks ago engaging with fans at D23 Expo, Marty left an indelible mark on Disney Parks around the globe and on all of the guests who make memories every day with us,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “He was one of the few people that was fortunate to attend the opening of every single Disney park in the world, from Anaheim in 1955 to Shanghai just last year. We will dearly miss Marty’s passion, skill and imaginative spark that inspired generations of Cast, Crew and Imagineers.”

Bob Weis was one of those Imagineers. “Marty was one of Walt’s most trusted advisors and helped turn his most ambitious dreams into reality. For us, it’s hard to imagine a world without Marty, because Marty is synonymous with Imagineering,” said Weis, President, Walt Disney Imagineering. “His influence can be seen around the world, in every Disney park, and in the creative and imaginative work of almost every professional in the themed entertainment industry.”

Marty’s impact and achievements were recognized with a number of prestigious awards and accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement award from TEA (Themed Entertainment Association), induction into the Hall of Fame of IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), and the prestigious Professional Achievement Award from UCLA.

He also authored several books about his experiences and adventures at Disney: Dream It! Do It!: My Half-Century Creating Disney’s Magic Kingdoms (2013), and One Little Spark!: Mickey’s Ten Commandments and The Road to Imagineering (2015).

Marty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leah; son Howard and his wife, Katriina Koski-Sklar; grandchildren Gabriel and Hannah; daughter Leslie; and grandchildren Rachel and Jacob.

Marty and Leah were two of the founders of the Ryman Program for Young Artists, a project of Ryman Arts, a nonprofit foundation whose purpose is to teach and mentor “traditional” drawing and painting skills to talented young artists in Southern California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marty’s name to Ryman Arts at www.rymanarts.org.

  • Trip report 06-05-14 audio 101 and more.

So here we go.  So I met up with Carline from ape pen publishing to get footage for a project and then we made our way to the park to have lunch and said our goodbye and I made my way to the esplanade.   So while I was recording audio that day my recorder was going through batteries.  I did 5 AA that day.  Why? Im cheap and buy from the 99c store.  I was able to get away with it with my old iRiver.

Oh I had a new recorder with me thanks to the donation from Paul Barrie. The Zoom H1  So other then that and it shutting off recording while video taping, its different having the recorder around my neck so I am going to make something like my old setup.  Any ways back to my day.  The park was not crowded like I thought it would be for a Thursday.  So I walked down Buena Vista Street and when your gone from the park for 13 months it all seems new again.  So make a left to goto bugs land and while in bugs land I decide to see its a bug life but it was not showing.  They were showing a preview of Maleficant and yes I know it is out in theaters but I d not have the time to go out to theaters or able to spend when behind in bills. Do my video recording and deal with the recorder eating up batteries and YES I will from now on pay for name brands to make sure it does not happen.

So I make my way after doing some rides to Disneyland.  If feels so good to be back so I make my way down Main Street USA and go to tomorrow land to check if Captain Eo was still there because I read it was not but it was.  I go in sit down and notice the Eo logo is not on the screen like it was when you enter the building.  Well the video started and I noticed the the floor was not moving like it did.  I think they are starting to scale it down to save on maintenance.  Now if they made it move like it did only until MJ would show the gift it would be fine.  The moving while the final scene was on is and was a but to much.

So now it was time to remove my AP photo because there was a black dot on my head and the photopass dude did not tell me and took the picture.  So I got a new one.  Later I saw it.  Another bad photo. DOH and I was told you cant upload your own photo anymore.  Ok so I made my way around and got my fast pass for Big Thunder.

Forward to my window to board I get on and they put me right in the front.  ok I will never do that again because that’s not a smooth part to ride.  I was jolted and I think its worse now. So I got to see the new addition and I like it.  Next time I will be in another area of the train because I could not tell how smooth the new track is.  I then make my way to Haunted Mansion to go on.

So its getting later in the evening and I was read for dinner and where do I go?  Rain Forrest Cafe.  Yes I used to have a Safari Club card but they changed it to a new system while back.  So since it is my Birthday Month they give you $25 towards your bill.  Sorry for no pictures but I forgot with the days events. GO back in the park and stay till closing and some more video recording.  I then make my way to my car and drive home.

The next day I dump my audio to the computer to hear what I recorded.  Ok it sounded different and where was lot of noise.  Why?  Because this bone head (me) plugged my binaurel mic in the headphone jack instead of the line in.  It was recording from the built in mics.  IT sounded good but my neck strap made noise and I would bump it with the tripod while walking. I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW.  Brain 101.  So with the suggestion of putting tape over the headphone jack so it does not happen again (thank you paul) I will go back and do it again.  I am recording audio for the next show.

I am also plotting and scouting what I want to do different this year at Friends Of The Magic event in August 8-10 2014 .  Well with that I say goodbye for now. I have lots to do with the next vidcast as well.

  • Tomorrow I return to the park after a 14 month hiatus

Sadly I did not want to not go anymore I just could not afford an annual pass.  This has changed.  I have purchased and did a down payment on my Premium Pass because I plan on going like I did before.  So tomorrow I will be there from 12p-10p so please come find me and I will be recording audio for a new episode of ATF.  I will also be checking things out for my FOTM meets and doing some planning.
